Holden Beach Area Golf CoursesHolden Beach is located in Brunswick County, North Carolina, which is home to more than 30 beautiful golf courses that are suited for a variety of skill levels. The area's combination of coastal waters, marshlands, rivers and maritime forests gives Brunswick County golfers a scenic view of natural beauty while they play their round(s) of golf. Most courses in Brunswick County are semi-private courses, which means they are open to the public with club memberships available. Prices at semi-private courses range from $30 to more than $100, with the higher prices being at the more exclusive clubs and during the peak seasons. Greens fees vary according to season and location. On the North Carolina coast, the weather is playable year-round because of the sub-tropical climate. The variety of courses in Brunswick County offer a price and playing condition for everyone. Lessons are available from several of the area courses as well. Many golfers who visit the Holden Beach area also enjoy the close proximity to nearby Myrtle Beach, South Carolina and the surrounding area known as the "Grand Strand." The Grand Strand coastal area of South Carolina is home to more than 100 golf courses. Whether golfers choose to play their game at one of the 30 Brunswick County courses or one of the more than 100 Myrtle Beach area courses, they are sure to enjoy your round of golf while taking in the area's beautiful surroundings. Below is a listing of some area Brunswick County golf courses. Lockwood Folly Country Club, located along the Lockwood Folly River and the Intracoastal Waterway, allows golfers to enjoy some of the most extraordinary scenery in the area. Created by William Byrd, this course has a course rating of 130 and a slope rating of 70.9. Players must dodge towering oak trees and tranquil ponds along the tight fairways of this 6,800 yard course, but the experience is worth the effort. Click here for more information. The Courses at Ocean Ridge Plantation are located about halfway between Myrtle Beach, SC and Wilmington along U.S. Highway 17 near N.C. Highway 904. Ocean Ridge Plantation is home to the "Big Cat" courses of Tiger's Eye, Lion's Paw, Panther's Run and Leopard's Chase, which are considered to be some of the finest golf courses in the Carolinas. These courses offer must-play opportunities to all levels of golfers. River's Edge Golf Club overlooks the Shallotte River and marshland and is located just an hour north of Myrtle Beach. Designed by golf legend Arnold Palmer, this challenging but fair course opened to the public in 1999. This 6,909 yard course has a course rating of 126 and a slope rating of 70, and offers exquisite scenery and challenging golf. Oak Island Golf Club, designed by George Cobb, was carved out of a maritime forest of pines and oaks. Players will find this 6,800-yard course offers a fair mix of elevated greens, water and bunkers, as well as the ocassional alligator. The long stretches of open, well-tended fairways can bring in an extra challenge to golfers when the coastal winds are up. Ths course offers a course rating of 69.1 and a slope rating of 117. Five of the front nine holes are on water, while four on the back nine holes have water, so the challenge often comes from both the elements and the course itself. Click here for more information. Bald Head Island Golf Club is a 6,855-yard, par 72 course that is situated along Bald Head Island's salt marshes, 15 freshwater lagoons and tidal creeks with more than 800 acres of maritime forests. Though a private course, Bald Head Island Golf Club is available for non-member play and offers golfers not only a challenging game, but a sightseeing excursion as well. To get to Bald Head Island, players ride a 30-minute passenger ferry from Southport. Golfers will be met at the ferry dock at Bald Head Island with a golf cart to get to the course. The wind on a calm day in Bald Head Island ranges from 15 to 20 knots, in the winter 30 knots. Click here for more information. The Clubs at St. James Plantation, located in the beautiful St. James area of Southport, North Carolina, is home to four courses and more than 80 holes of golf. Each course has its own full-service clubhouse, including a state-of-the art fitness center, indoor and outdoor water facilities, walking and biking trails, and eight clay surfaced tennis courts. Courses located at St. James Plantation include The Reserve, The Founders Club, The Members Club and The Players Club. Click here for more information. Carolina National Golf Club, part of the Winding River Plantation located along the Lockwood Folly River, was designed with five sets of strategically placed tees. Located about two miles from Supply along Route 211 near Southport, Carolina National Golf Club has the course details to challenge golfers of all skill levels. This beautiful, environmentally-friendly 7,014 yard course winds through oaks, pines and magnolias and features fast fairways and well-conditioned greens. River Hills Golf & Country Club was built with a clever placement of water, imaginative hole layout, well-manicured greens and four sets of tees on each hole. The variety found here makes this a perfect course for those of all skill levels. River Hills Golf & Country Club offers a terrain that demands that golfers use every club in their bag when they face the challenge of non-parallel fairways, grassy bunkers and frequent elevation changes of up to 40 feet. Situated along a 900-acre marsh preserve, The Pearl Golf Links offers two 18-hole golf courses, a practice range, a full-service golf shop, and a variety of golf instruction opportunities for all ages. Click here for more information. Magnolia Greens Golf Plantation is located on the north side of Brunswick County in Leland, just a few minutes south of Wilmington. This course, designed by Tom Jackson, is home to rolling bent grass greens, mounded fairways and two-tiered greens. The average hitter can play traditional golf and expect a decent score from this course, with its mix of intriguing dogleg, picture-quality and challenging holes. Crow Creek Golf Club, created by nature itself, is a golf course that takes golfers through pristine Carolina Woodlands. Created by former Jack Nicklaus design associate Rick Robbins, Crow Creek offers an enjoyable challenge for a variety of skill levels. It has sloping bent grass greens with water on sixteen holes. The course plays almost 6,800 yards from the back tees and is unique because no two fairways run parallel to another. After being purchased by Foreward Golf, Inc.,the golf course has improved drastically and the already great layout is becoming well known for its turf quality as well as serenity and player friendliness.
